My Journey at Long Beach City College: From Yokohama to California
Hi, my name is Takato Watabe, and I’m from Yokohama, Japan. I’m currently studying Business Administration at Long Beach City College (LBCC). Ever since I was young, I have been fascinated by different cultures and the idea of studying abroad. I wanted to experience a place where I could meet people from diverse backgrounds, challenge myself academically, and step outside my comfort zone. After thorough research, I chose LBCC because of its welcoming community, balanced environment, and opportunities for growth. Now, after eight months here, I can confidently say that LBCC has been the perfect stepping stone toward achieving my long-term goals.
Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone
Moving to a new country is never easy, but I came to LBCC with an open mind and the expectation that I would find an environment that would help me achieve my dreams. The diversity here has amazed me—I’ve met so many students who are interested in different cultures, including my own. It has given me the chance to share my experiences from Japan and compare life in both countries, something that has been both enlightening and rewarding.
Through the Japanese Culture Club, I’ve had the opportunity to introduce Japanese traditions to fellow students. With the help of our amazing club officers, I’m doing my best to create engaging events that bring Japanese culture to LBCC in an authentic and fun way. Additionally, my involvement in the Viking Volunteer Program has allowed me to contribute to the community, something that I’ve become very passionate about.
A Place for Growth
LBCC has pushed me to be the best version of myself. It’s my first school experience in the United States, and being surrounded by such a diverse student body has broadened my world perspective. Academically, I’ve become more competitive and focused, constantly working to maintain a high GPA while balancing my extracurricular activities. The school has encouraged me to be more disciplined, completing my work in a timely manner and staying on top of my studies.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned here is to take advantage of the resources around me. I always tell new students to make full use of the tutoring opportunities and technology available in the library—it has helped me tremendously in my studies.
Inspiration and Future Goals
My biggest inspiration in life is my mom. She traveled abroad to Japan, and that experience influenced me to pursue my own international education. Her strength and support for our family have always impressed me, and I look up to her in so many ways.
Looking ahead, my ultimate goal is to establish a business that provides assistance to disadvantaged people. I believe that education and cultural exchange can change lives, and I want to be part of that change. After LBCC, I plan to transfer to UCLA if I get the chance, and from there, I hope to pursue entrepreneurship. One of my dreams is to create more schools in the U.S. that teach Japanese language and culture. I also want a career that allows me to travel and work in different countries, constantly learning and growing in diverse environments.
What Long Beach City College Has Taught Me
LBCC is more than just a school to me—it’s a place where I can chase my dreams, meet incredible people, and grow into the person I want to become. It has shaped me into a more productive and ambitious individual, and I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned so far.
To new students: take every opportunity you can. Get involved in clubs, volunteer, and make connections with people from different backgrounds. Your experience here will be what you make of it, and LBCC is a great place to start building your future.
My journey at Long Beach City College is just the beginning, and I’m excited to see where this path will take me next!
