Building a Strong Foundation at Portland Community College
Originally from Maracay, Venezuela, Maria Hands Ruz chose Portland Community College as the launchpad for her academic aspirations. She pursued an Associate of Arts degree with an Oregon transfer focus, a decision that allowed her to adapt to the U.S. educational system while exploring her growing interest in psychology.
During her time at PCC, Maria was actively involved in student leadership roles, including serving as an International Peer Leader and an International Student Ambassador at the Women’s Resource Center. She played a crucial role in organizing events to support international students, facilitating English conversation sessions, and helping students integrate into campus life. Additionally, she volunteered as an International Student Orientation Mentor, further solidifying her commitment to fostering inclusive educational environments.
Reflecting on her time at PCC, Maria shares, “My time at PCC introduced me to the U.S. educational system and motivated me to learn more about my field of interest: psychology. While I was a student at PCC Rock Creek, I got the opportunity to be involved in student leadership, creating great events for students, and connecting with amazing people. I graduated with my associate's of arts in 2019, but I am still in contact with many friends from the college.”
Continuing Excellence at Pacific University
After graduating from PCC, Maria transferred to Pacific University, where she pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Her time at Pacific University further fueled her academic and professional growth. She engaged in undergraduate research under the mentorship of Dr. Jenelle Shanley, working as a research assistant and gaining hands-on experience in psychological research methodologies.
Her research experience at Pacific University strengthened her foundation in clinical psychology and set the stage for her future work in some of the most prestigious institutions in the field. She successfully completed her degree in the spring of 2021 and then embarked on her Optional Practical Training (OPT), allowing her to gain further professional experience in the U.S.

Graduate Research Assistant (2022 - Present): Contributing to research in the Laboratory for Clinical and Developmental Studies (LCDS) at Teachers College, Columbia University under the guidance of Dr. Christine Cha.
Project Manager (2023 - Present): Leading projects at the Loss, Trauma, & Emotion (LTE) Lab, collaborating with Dr. George Bonanno on trauma-related psychological research.
Research Intern (2023 - 2024): Working with Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s Sexual Violence Response Team to provide critical research insights into trauma and response mechanisms.
Medical Case Manager (2021 - 2022): Coordinating healthcare and vaccine outreach efforts at Lutheran Community Services Northwest, bridging research and direct community impact.
