From Vietnam to Success – My Journey at Portland Community College
Hello there! I’m Phuong Vo, and I want to share my story of how I went from dreaming of studying abroad in a small town in Vietnam to making it happen in the U.S. at Portland Community College (PCC). My journey wasn’t always easy, but it was worth every challenge. If you’re thinking about studying abroad or stepping into the unknown, let me tell you—it’s possible!
Taking the Leap: Why I Chose to Study in the U.S.
Studying abroad was my dream, so I always looked for an opportunity to make it come true. The first reason I am in the United States is that my aunt lives here. Additionally, studying and living in the U.S. has given me the opportunity to emerge in a very diverse society where I encounter so many different cultures and interact with people from all over the world. That, to me, is an incredible privilege.
Why Portland Community College Was the Perfect Fit
I was considering both Portland Community College (PCC) and Mount Hood Community College. After doing my research, I found that PCC had a very welcoming culture and diverse community, which made my decision easy. Most of my instructors were incredibly supportive, and I made so many international friends. I learned so much from them, and it made my experience even better.
PCC also has four campuses, which made it super convenient no matter where I lived in Portland. One of the things I love most about PCC is that even though people come from different backgrounds and histories, everyone is open and welcoming. It’s such an inclusive place, and I am truly grateful to be a PCC alumnus.
Finding My People and a Support System
Moving to a new country is overwhelming, but PCC made sure I never felt alone. The International Student Office had my back from day one, and I could always ask for help and support.
I also joined and worked at the Associated Students of Portland Community College (ASPCC) for three years, where I grew so much. My communication skills improved drastically, my teamwork skills were put to the test, and I learned how to work with an open mind in a diverse group of students from all over the world.
“The scholarship motivated me to keep trying and move forward with my education. At PCC, I felt welcomed and like I truly belonged.”
Stepping Up as a Leader & Giving Back
I didn’t just want to succeed at PCC—I wanted to help others succeed too. So I joined ASPCC, working alongside students from all over the world to create events, advocate for international students, and make sure every voice was heard.
One of my most memorable experiences? Traveling with PCC to Hawaii to help build homes for low-income families and heading to Washington, D.C., to meet with elected leaders about student issues. These moments shaped me and showed me the power of community service and advocacy.
Overcoming Challenges & Thriving
Let’s be real—moving to the U.S. wasn’t easy. The language barrier was tough, and at first, I struggled to communicate. I was upset and depressed, but I reminded myself why I came to the U.S. Instead of giving up, I found more ways to practice English—volunteering, working at the bookstore, and speaking up in ASPCC meetings. Day by day, my English improved.
One of the biggest surprises for me was how open the education system is in the U.S. Back in Vietnam, I never experienced sitting in the same room with classmates who were older than me or even the same age as my parents or grandparents. It felt different at first, but I quickly realized that here, education has no age limit. That’s something I now deeply appreciate and hope to see more of in Vietnam one day.
Graduation & What’s Next
In 2020, I officially graduated with an Associate of Arts Transfer Degree in Sociology, along with my associate degrees in Science and General Studies. After PCC, I transferred to pursue my bachelor’s degree in global studies, with a focus on religions, cultures, and civilizations.
“My dream now is to work for a non-profit organization as a program coordinator or educator, maybe even in Africa, helping communities in need.”
PCC didn’t just give me a degree—it gave me a purpose, lifelong friendships, and the courage to go after my dreams. If you’re an international student wondering if it’s worth it, trust me—it is.
