My Journey at Long Beach City College: Finding Success as an International Nursing Student
My name is Hong Sodalis, and college, for me, has been more than just classes—it’s been about growth, finding my people, and figuring out who I am. As an international student from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, my journey at Long Beach City College (LBCC) has been all about stepping outside my comfort zone, chasing my dreams, and embracing a whole new world.
From Phnom Penh to SoCal: Taking a Leap of Faith
After graduating from high school in Cambodia, I decided to pursue my education abroad. I wanted a high-quality education while also exploring the world. I planned to attend a community college, and Long Beach City College (LBCC) stood out as one of the top choices in Southern California. The International Student Program and the variety of courses available made it an easy decision for me.
Leveling Up: Tackling Challenges Head-On
When I first arrived in the U.S., my dream was to improve my English and adjust to the American environment. I encountered many challenges as an international student, but Long Beach City College (LBCC) provided the support I needed to overcome them. Through ESL classes and general education courses, I was able to refine my English skills, which helped boost my confidence. Now, as a pre-nursing student, I’m working hard to get into the nursing program, even though I know it’s a competitive and challenging path.
Currently, I also work as a Student Assistant at the Academic Computing Center, which has helped me become more confident and independent. I used to be a quiet introvert, hesitant to communicate with English speakers. But my role at the Computing Center has helped me develop a more mature mindset, an attitude of perseverance, and a better understanding of diverse perspectives.
Making an Impact & Owning My Culture
One of my goals at Long Beach City College (LBCC) is to share my Cambodian culture with my classmates. Although Long Beach has a large Cambodian community, I’ve noticed that many people don’t know much about our traditions. I hope to introduce more students to Cambodian culture, creating a deeper understanding of my community and heritage.
My Biggest Inspiration & Dream Career Goals
My biggest inspiration? My parents. I was born in a developing country where traditions and culture often dictate a woman’s life and limit educational opportunities. But my parents defied those norms, prioritizing my happiness, health, and education. Seeing them work hard to support my studies has motivated me to push through every challenge and make them proud.
Graduating with a degree is my ultimate dream, but my long-term goal is to utilize the knowledge I gain here in the U.S. to contribute to the medical field in Cambodia. I’m passionate about becoming a Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Anesthetist and making a difference in healthcare both here and back home.
Real Talk: My Advice for New LBCC Students
Being a college student can be tough, but here’s what I’ve learned:

LBCC has so many resources that students should take advantage of. The Learning Academic Resources (LAR), Library, Tutoring Center, and Academic Computing Center have all helped me improve my academic performance. What’s Next? A Future in Healthcare
I have set my future goals into three main categories:
Short-term goal: Earn my AA degree and transfer to a prestigious university like CSU or UC.
Mid-term goal: Graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Long-term goal: Utilize my education and qualifications to work in the medical field in Cambodia and help improve healthcare access.
My journey at LBCC has shaped me into a more confident, independent, and determined person. The experiences I’ve gained here have taught me that life isn’t always a straight path—there will be ups and downs. But those challenges are what help us grow and achieve our dreams.
